Meet Miss Em: Emily Bradshaw
Emily started taking piano lessons at 7 years old. However, her love for music started before that. She discovered an interest in music when she was in her school musical at 6 years old. She was quite the little performer, and this is when she decided to start branching out and learning more musical skills.
She started learning piano through the Suzuki method, which teaches students to play by ear, but she also learned how to read music so she could play both by ear and by sight-reading. She has been playing the piano for over 20 years now, and during that time has studied with numerous well-known teachers in their field, such as Dr. Carmen Hall, Dr. Robin Hancock, Dr. Jeffrey Shumway, and Dr. Janae Williams.
Emily accompanied her school choirs from 6th grade clear up through college at BYU. She participated in numerous choirs, including All-State and ACDA Honor Choirs, as well as the BYU Women’s Chorus. She has participated in various piano competitions and festivals as well. She received Superior Ratings, placed 2nd in her category, and participated in Honor’s Recitals. She was also the recipient of the “Accompanist of the Year Award” for the Music in the Parks festival.
At age 14, neighbors and friends started asking Emily to teach their children piano. She has run her own private piano studio ever since. This sparked Emily’s passion for not just music, but teaching music.
Emily decided to continue to follow the music teaching route by studying Music Education at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. She was among a small group of those accepted each year to the General Music Education program. She completed the program and graduated in 2019 and began teaching elementary school music in Provo City School district immediately following graduation. Here she taught ukulele, guitar, and general music. In 2022, she ended up moving to Alpine School District to teach elementary school music (including ukulele) and direct the school’s choir and “bucket band.” Throughout this time she continued to provide private lessons from her home.
Now that Emily has two children of her own, she is turning her focus more to her private music studio. She offers piano, voice, ukulele and guitar lessons. She is a SongWorks certified educator, which means she places focus on learning through play, since that is a huge part of how children learn. It is her goal to help children learn to love and understand music so that they will continue to recognize its role in their everyday lives.
